It was a big week for professional poker player Erik Seidel, as he was officially announced as one of the two inductees into the Poker Hall of Fame for 2010.
The fifty-year-old Seidel, who was actually born and raised in New York City, has been a fixture in the World Series of Poker events since the late 80's. And he has won so frequently that you could handle all your man-cave game room decor just by putting up the awards and bracelets he's won.
Seidel, who came in 2nd place in his very first major World Series of Poker tournament (which just so happened to be the Main Event, Pokers biggest stage), has had 18 money finished when it comes to his career in the World Poker Tour. He's also been at three final tables, most notably the Main Event final table in both 1988 and 1999. With his eight World Series of Poker bracelets, a World Poker Tour title, his 60 World Series of Poker cashes and his total live tournament winnings over $10,000,000, he is unarguably one of the most successful professional poker players in the world.
However, none of his previous accomplishments likely weighed as heavily with the voters than the endorsement Seidel received from Doyle Brunson. The Poker Legend called Seidel a shoe-in for the Poker Hall of Fame, a tremendous compliment from the man responsible for a series of poker books, including "Doyle Brunson's Super System."
The announcement was featured on Erik Seidel's official website. The page also features a list of Seidel's original music, a plethora of related links, and a gallery of photos. And for all those individuals who want to get better at the game of poker but don't want to go out and purchase a series of poker DVDs or poker books, Seidel also has an entire section dedicated to offering tips for up-and-coming poker enthusiasts.
All that being said, Seidel's most infamous moment was arguably his cameo appearance in the 1998 film Rounders. The movie featured Matt Damon as an underground poker player who quotes poker books and poker DVDs as life lessons.
The cameo shot is actually just a replay of Seidel in his first major tournament, the 1988 World Series of Poker Main Event. Seidel is seen getting beat by fellow-Hall-of-Fame member Johnny Chan
The other gentleman to be inducted is Dan Harrington, and the official ceremony takes place on November 8th.
